Chapter 43 – Sword and Sorcery

“What‽” Torres was the first to ask, utter disbelief in his voice. “Just like that? Was it just the regular fireball spell or something else? Tell me quickly!”

“Just the normal spell as far as I can tell,” Jacob replied, his words almost muddled as he spoke so quickly. “The prompt just came up and of course, I accepted the spell right away and then all of a sudden, I was told I’ve got my new Class. I’m actually a Spellsword now, can you believe it? It’s like it was all I ever wanted and then you showed up and I was given it there and then!”

“Yeah…” Petra said, giving Titus a searching glance. “Funny how that happened.”

“What?” Titus asked. “I didn’t do anything different; I just did like they said - I cast the spell and that was that.”

“Can you put more Mana into the spell, Jacob?” Torres asked. “Cast it now and see what it does.”

Jacob’s hands were shaking at the concept of casting an actual spell, though he did what he was told and positioned himself as Titus had to cast his newest ability.

“It’s only seven Mana,” Jacob announced. “And I don’t think I can change that. Should I be able to?” he asked.

“No, no,” Torres replied. “But cast your spell and let’s all see what happens.”

Jacob didn’t need to be told a third time and Titus took great pleasure in watching the small amount of Mana within the boy swirl and fuse into the fireball spell that he’d cast himself so many times. Indeed, it was as ordinary as the spell could go, though Jacob looked like the cat that had got the cream.

“This is so amazing,” he practically hissed. “Once I’m old enough to get out there and fight monsters for the crowds, this is going to be such an advantage!”

“How old do you have to be…” Petra started to ask, but Jacob and Torres both answered before she could finish.

“Sixteen!” they said in tandem. “Less than a year and I’ll be out there,” Jacob punctuated.

"It's amazing for sure,” Petra replied, her eyes narrowing. “But it’s not all fun and games out there…”

“I know,” Jacob interrupted again pushing down on his excitement. “I’ve been watching the fights for as long as I can remember and it’s all I’ve ever wanted. I know it's dangerous out there - now more than ever - but to be able to say that you’re making a difference, that you’re protecting the City from those foul beasts… I mean, who wouldn’t want that?”

It was a fair answer, and when posed in such a way, Titus couldn’t argue with it. But he’d experienced the horrors of the Arena and the realities of death all too soon and he knew how it took its toll on a person.

“Have you considered the implications of having a mixed Class like this right off the bat?” Petra asked, her tone cautious, contrasting with Jacob's excitement. "Being able to cast spells means
